About The Event

NSHM's First Cut – Short Films & More is organised by the Department of Film & Television under NSMC (NSHM School of Media & Communication). The department offers B.Sc. & M.Sc. courses in film and television studies under MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology) at NSHM Knowledge Campus, Kolkata. It is one of the best destinations in Media and Communication in India.

Event: This competitive and learning event aims to provide opportunity to the young students and film buffs of gaining better exposure to the world of short films.

The Workshop:It is imperative for us to not only provide support to our student community in this noble effort but to guide them for further enhancement of their talent and exposure. Hence, a workshop by the noteworthy members of the jury panel will be conducted to mentor the students on the technicalities of filmmaking.

The Contest:The idea of making dreams come true through storytelling, is brought to reality in every way by young students of our society as they paint and pen their ideas through cinema. At NSHM's First Cut – Short Films & More contest, a platform has been provided to young filmmakers to showcase their works by means of a healthy competition. Best films from each of the three categories will be selected by the internal faculty & invited guests. The winner and runner up from each category will be awarded by our jury members.

The Three Film Categories For Entry

Category 1: Fiction

Terms And Conditions
  • Entries should not be more than 10 minutes and not less than 5 minutes
  • All the participating films should have been made after December, 2016
  • Participants are requested to send the following:
    • A short write-up on the film
    • Brief biography of the filmmaker in not more than 150 words
  • All submissions should be made in .mp4 format
  • Entry Deadline: 18 August, 2019

Category 2: Non-fiction / Documentary

Terms And Conditions
  • Entries should not be more than 10 minutes and not less than 5 minutes
  • All the participating films should have been made after December, 2016
  • Participants are requested to send the following:
    • A short write-up on the film
    • Brief biography of the filmmaker in not more than 150 words
  • All submissions should be made in .mp4 format
  • Entry Deadline: 18 August, 2019

Category 3: Animation

Terms And Conditions
  • Can be a group or individual submission representing a college / group as well as independent artists
  • Any medium (2d/3d/mixed media) is accepted
  • Entries must be within 3 minutes to 5 minutes
  • All the participating films should have been made after December, 2016
  • Participants are requested to send the following:
    • A short write-up on the film
    • Brief biography of the filmmaker in not more than 150 words
  • All submissions should be made in .mp4 format
  • Entry Deadline: 18 August, 2019

Our Prestigious Jury Members

Pradipta Bhattacharya

An award-wining filmmaker, scriptwriter, and editor, who works on a number of cinematic genres. He has worked on various short films, documentaries, animation films, and feature films. Some of his notable works include Khirer Putul, Bicycle Kick, and Bakita Byaktigato.


Tapan Bhattacharya

A graduate from SRFTI YEAR 2000 with Diploma in Sound Recording is engaged in teaching sound design since 2004 as faculty member and is associated with films like Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Abar Aranyey, Patal Ghar etc.


Sudeshna Roy

An Indian film director, actor & writer based in Tollywood. She started her career as an entertainment Journalist before collaborating with director Abhijit Guha and foraying into the film industry. The duo debuted with their first film Shudhu Tumi.
